THE RIDES

So far, I have owned 5 cars, and loved every one. Below is a BIO on each. In all honesty, I don't usually put tonnes of money into my cars for upgrades, but I do put in the effort to make them stand out. I think it's so neat to see a car you once owned driving down the street, and knowing it was yours by the little customizations. To see more photos, click on the picture of each car.

1984 CHEVETTE SS

OK, so technically there never was a Chevette SS production car. Gimme a break, it was my first car. Come on, you know what I'm talking about. The first car is for most of us a pipedream of what it really was. A car that is put high up on a "Pride Mantle" for all to ooze over; or at least from the owner's perspective. That was me alright, except my baby was cool, honest. I mean how could you argue when it boasted a huge 60hp, and enough torque to make that puppy go from 0 to 60mph in... oh wait, it couldn't actually reach that high of speed. Oh well, it was faster than my bike (top end, but not off the line) and definatley better than Public Transit!

The Down Low:

Make/Model: Chevrolet/Chevette 'Scooter'

Original cost: $5489CDN (1984) approx.

Paid: $400CDN (1993)

Name: 'The Vette'

I bought it from the dealership my dad worked at. They had two Chevette courtesy cars they wanted to sell and that's how I ended up with it. Mechanically it was great, but needed a lot of TLC for body work. When I was done fixing it up it earned a reputation as being Calgary's nicest Chevette (at least to me and mine).

Base specs

  • 1.6L engine (60hp)
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • 3 door hatchback
  • 13" tires (black rims)
  • AM Mono radio
  • Upgraded bumpers from regular model
  • Orange striping

Custom Upgrades

  • Leather steering wheel cover
  • Outside/inside digital thermometer
  • Silver wheel covers
  • Tinting
  • Tape Deck, 60watt amp, 2 pioneer 6x9 boxed speakers
  • New blue stripe weather stripping
  • Blue Chevette SS detailing
  • Blue Chevy 'bow-tie' emblems on wheel covers
  • Silver Calgary Flames sticker on silver 'bow-tie' on the grill
  • Restored paint and body to near-new finish

Racing Stats

I only ever beat one person with it (not including pedestrians and bicyclists). It was my buddy Joe's 1979 Buick LeSabre. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. We were driving along side each other one day and he taunted me (as he always did because his car was far faster than mine), and I said, "Fine, next set of lights, it's you and me!", knowing I was going to lose again. The light ahead turned red, we stopped, he reved his engine, the light turned green and I had him beat by 10 car lengths to my amazement. Little did I know at that point he ran out of gas, but hey, take it when you can get it.

Where is it today:

I sold the car after a year for $1500CDN to a student. She instantly loved it and that was the last I saw of it. I actually had a lump in my throat when she drove away with it (just can't beat that first car). It was recently spotted by my buddy Joe (Nov. 2001) and he said it was in rough shape. That sucks, but I'm glad it's still alive. No matter what happens to it, I'll always remember it as I last saw it; shining, all freshly cleaned, taking forever, and ever, to disapear into the sunset.

1989 CORSICA LT

As I mentioned above, I like my cars to stand out. This one did especially due to the fact it was a fastback design where as 99% of these cars were regular sedans. To me it looked kind of funny until I added a spoiler to it, and then I was much happier.

The Down Low:

Make/Model: Chevrolet/Corsica LT

Original cost: $11035CDN (1989) approx.

Paid: $1500CDN (1995)

Name: 'Corey'

I picked this car up at a bank-repo auction for very cheap. Granted the front doors had broken pins and were falling off the car, and it was poorly maintained, but I didn’t care, I wanted *more power (*see chevette). Besides, my dad was in the business and he knew that the door pins were a common problem with those cars, and were a $10 fix each. The poor maintenance was no problem because my dad knew what to look for, and I budgeted for it. So I was set. This car seemed like a Cadillac to me coming from my Chevette, so I was happy… for a little while. In all fairness, the car was very poorly maintained because the original owner knew they were going to lose it to the bank, so I can’t blame Chevrolet for the problems I had. But I’d have to say I didn’t have much confidence in the car. Too many repairs made it hard to trust, though I was still thankful to have it.

Base specs

  • 2.8L Multiport FI engine (130hp)
  • 5 speed manual
  • Front-wheel drive
  • 5 door hatchback
  • 14" tires (silver wheel cover/rim combo)
  • Delco AM/FM Stereo c/w tape
  • Cruise
  • A/C

Custom Upgrades

  • Leather steering wheel cover
  • Spoiler
  • 5-star aluminum rims off of Chevy Celebrity
  • Tinting
  • 60watt amp, 2 pioneer 6x9 boxed speakers
  • Chevrocks windshield decal
  • Chevrolet back window decal
  • Light Covers
  • Restored paint and body to near-new finish

    Racing Stats

I definitely didn’t beat everything on the road, but I could put up a decent fight. I just enjoyed no long getting blown away by my friends. All in all, it had good enough power to keep me happy for the time I had it.

Where is it today:

I sold the car over a year later for $2500CDN to some guy. It turns out the car was very reliable for him which makes me happy because I knew it’s history, and felt bad about selling a lemon, but it all worked out. I’d see it from time to time, and he looked after it alright. Even with the problems I had with it, I’d still say I was very happy to have owned it.

1997 SUNFIRE GT

When I initially chose this car, I didn't realize just how much value I was getting for my dollar. The car had styling and performance. It looked excellent in black, but was hard to keep clean. I didn't mind that so much because it was just another excuse for me to detail it.

The Down Low:

Make/Model: Pontiac/Sunfire GT

Original cost: $23532CDN (1997) approx.

Paid: Leased New

Name: 'The GT'

I leased this car from my dad and I'd have to say he looks after his kid pretty well. With all available options, I didn't need anything else.

  • Front-wheel drive
  • 5 speed manual

  • Logo detailing

Racing Stats

Among the usual crew, I never lost a race. That says quite a bit because everyone else was in the V-8 class of car. The only one of our friends I didn't get to race was James and his Z34. While in my car he said mine was faster, when I was in his, I though he'd beat me. I think we both agreed not to race to spite Joe, who would always say that James was bad-mouthing me and vise versa. Oh well, I guess we'll never know.

Where is it today:

There's no real special story here. I finished my lease and moved on. I haven't seen it since, but my buddy Ritchie said he did some service work on it in his shop.

1999 SONOMA HIGHRIDER

Well this truck is just more proof that I know how to pick my women. This is Debbie's primary driver, and her big-baby that she picked on her own. When I'm in her good graces, she let's me and the boys put it to the test. You might think it's unfair I get to beat up on her veichle, but believe me, she puts 'The Prix' through it's hurdles too. From Widetrack to Highrider, we get our kicks on and off the beaten path.

The Down Low:

Make/Model: GMC/Sonoma Highrider

Original cost: $32299CDN (1999) approx.

Paid: Leased New

Name: 'High Rise'

We leased this truck from my dad and we weren't disappointed. We love everything about it. I thought the coolest part about it was that we entered into a new realm of veichles. I've been a car fan all my life and paid a little respect to trucks now and then, but my perspective has broadened now for the better. It's neat to drive down the road and be higher than most cars, and to have the respect of other truck people. Alberta makes up 60% of Canada's truck sales so there's plenty to look at in trucking around here. Good choice woman!

Base specs

  • 4.3L Vortec engine (190hp)
  • Automatic transmission
  • Four-wheel drive
  • 3 door pick-up
  • 31x10.5 R15 tires (aluminum rim)
  • Delco AM/FM Stereo c/w CD
  • A/C, Cruise, PDL,PW
  • Off-road package

Custom Upgrades

  • Hood deflector
  • Rain deflectors on windows
  • Spray-in box liner
  • ZR2 detailing

Racing Stats

It's pretty quick but that's not why we bought it. It's purpose is to off-road, and that we have done. From Bragg Creek, Maclean Creek to Wypress (incorrect spelling), it has handled all challenges with ease (except for that one high-centering incident). The truck

Where is it today:

We still have it leased, and plan to buy it out in the end.

2000 GRAND PRIX GT

This is my current ride, and without a doubt this is the best car I've owned thus far. I can't say enough good things about it, (and the car's not even fully loaded!). This car handles, performs and looks beautiful. I get the excitement over driving it like I did my first car. I remember wanting to drive my Chevette because I could, and that it represented freedom. This car makes me feel that way again which is refreshing, considering I've been driving for so many years. I read a Grand Prix advertisment once that said, "Take the long way home", and I think that nailed it right on.

The Down Low:

Make/Model: Pontiac/Grand Prix GT

Original cost: $$26 444CDN (2000) approx.

Paid: Leased New

Name: 'The Prix'

I leased this car from my dad and he's definitely got the hook-up. I was happy when the deal went through because I had ordered a Grand Prix GTP from him before, but due to financial problems it didn't happen. I appreciated how he handled it, and didn't give me a hard time. Just as with the GTP, I was able to have this one custom ordered from the plant. You're probably wondering why not a GTP again? Well, even with my dad looking after me with a good deal, the GTP was out of range. In all honesty I could have afforded it, but I didn't want to sacrifice that extra money to not being able to do/buy other stuff. I don't believe in being mortgage/debt poor. Besides, it gives me something to shoot for next time round.

  • 3.8L Multiport FI OHC engine (200hp)
  • Automatic Transmission
  • Front-wheel drive
  • 2 door coupe
  • 16" tires (high polished aluminum 5-star rims)
  • Delco AM/FM Stereo c/w CD, EQ
  • Dual exhaust
  • Radio antenna built into the rear window
  • Cruise, A/C
  • PW, PDL

Custom Upgrades

  • Logo detailing, "GT" off of Grand Am GT
  • Tinting
  • Rain deflectors on both windows

Racing Stats

Strangely enough, even after over a year of having this car, I haven't street raced much. I'm more than willing, but there hasn't been many to challenge. Anyone I have gone up against I've beaten, (except for that damn Porche), but I'd like to test it's power further. Joe and I did spend some time at Race City Speedway, (best time was 16sec), and that helped getting it out of my system. But as with all my cars, I'll never get enough of racing them.

Where is it today:

I'm still leasing, and loving every minute of it.
